Roderick H. Spencer, age 79, a longtime Island resident and graduate of Vashon High School Class of 1951, passed away on March 7, 2012 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease. Born January 2, 1933 in Fillmore, NY, Rod served in the US Navy 1955-1957, where he and his wife, Janet (Simpson) were stationed in San Diego, CA. He and Janet made their home on Vashon in 1957 and he became the AM carrier for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer until 2000. He also drove the afternoon school bus on Vashon and drove for many VHS team trips. Very active in the Vashon Jaycee's, Rod served as the Miss Vashon Pageant committee chairman in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Rod’s favorite pastime was driving his family to Florida, including his in-laws, many times throughout his life, from Seattle to Daytona Beach, Florida and from Daytona Beach, Florida to Chautauqua, NY, where he had deep family roots. Those who knew Rod knew that behind the wheel of a car, and there were many, was where he was at his best. Rod is survived by Janet, his wife of 56 years, and their children, Mark, Susie Kinney and Phillip (Annette), and grandchildren, Chanson Kinney and Allison Spencer. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandpa ("Poppy") and friend. Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. Please join the family at an open house to celebrate Rod's life on Sunday, April 22nd from 2-4pm at 11525 SW 104th Place. Please park on SW 116th. See driving directions under Janet Spencer.
