Glenn Jones Spalding

June 6, 1924 ~ February 11, 2017 (age 92)

Glenn on was born in Seattle to Hubert Alvin Spalding and Mina May (Jones) Spalding, living in West Seattle and Port Orchard before moving in 1931 to Vashon Island onto property purchased in the late 1800’s by his grandfather William Alvin Spalding. William named the community on Colvos Passage “Cedarhurst” so a mailing address could be established.  Theirs’s was a busy home with 3 children and many foster boys as they also served as a “sheriffs home”.

Glenn shared stories of rowing around the Island and camping on the beaches. He tended his goat herd, learned to swim in Puget Sound, delivered milk and groceries to homes along the beach, built a sailboat from oak boards which washed to shore and took many hikes into the Cascade and Olympic Mountains.

Glenn graduated from Vashon High School attending WSU for a time. He married Lorraine Alys King July 31, 1948. He worked for Boeing and became one of the first computer programmers retiring as a manager with Boeing Computer Services after 36 years.

In 1959 Glenn and Lorraine moved to Steel Lake in Federal Way where they raised 2 children. They spent their retirement enjoying boating throughout Puget Sound and B.C. and RVing throughout the US and Mexico. Glenn volunteered at the Federal Way Group Health Clinic, providing transportation for elders who could not drive.

Glenn was the middle child of 3, the eldest Margaret Rosser passed away February 16, 2016 and Donna Douglass who survives him. Glenn was married to Lorraine Alys (King) Spalding who passed away in 2008 one day short of their 60th anniversary. Glenn is survived by 2 children, Glenn Craig Spalding and Pamela Lucile Spalding Benson. A third child, Elizabeth, died at birth. Glenn has 3 grandchildren from Craig, Kathryn Allene (Spalding) McMurray, Stephen Glenn Spalding, and William Jack Spalding and 2 great grandsons from Kathryn, John Daniel McMurray and Evan Spalding McMurray. Grandchildren from Pamela are Lynn Edward Benson Jr., (BJ) and Jeremy Alan Benson. And 2 great granddaughters from BJ, Kourtney Ashlyn Benson and Blakely Gracelynn Benson.

Glenn was buried in the family plot at the Vashon Island Cemetery on February 18.
