Diana Lynne
Hokenson
Oct 20, 1945 — May 29, 2017
Diana was born October 20, 1945, in Brooklyn, NY, to Walter and Helen Koszalka. She graduated from Harcum Junior College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and Jefferson Medical College Hospital of Philadelphia and enjoyed a variety of jobs including, medical laboratory technician, bank teller and government aviation fuel clerk/auditor. She married Reynold Hokenson on January 16, 1982, and subsequently moved from Brookfield, CT to an area of Issaquah that was later incorporated into Bellevue, WA. She returned to school and received a BA, Cum Laude, from Seattle University that inspired her to attend SST Travel School and work for a short time as a travel agent specializing in ocean cruises. She later enjoyed being a Mary Kay consultant and then decided to start her own seamstress and machine embroidery business.
It was while circumnavigating Vashon in a kayak with other WA Kayak club members that she spotted a home she really liked. She and Rey purchased it about one year later and moved to Vashon, where they've lived for over 20 years. She and Rey enjoyed travel, and after numerous visits to all of the Hawaiian Islands, also purchased a condo on Molokai. Diana truly enjoyed the Molokai beaches, music, and the many friends she made over the years and most recently while undergoing chemotherapy.
Diana was a member of St John Vianney Catholic Church on Vashon and St Damien Catholic Parish, Kaunakakai, HI. Over the years, Diana was a member of the Eagles, Toastmasters International, including club president, area judge, and area governor. She was a member of the SJV Woman's Club, and Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club. She enjoyed many hobbies and interests including the following: knitting, sewing, gardening, sketching and painting, ukulele strumming, zoo animal docent, cat and kitten foster home provider, volunteer cruise ship greeter, kayaking, sailing, ocean cruising and travel, motor home travel, reading, bridge, backgammon, model HO gage railroading, dancing and cooking. She also enjoyed listening to music and attending concerts, especially those featuring the golden oldies artists, the Moody Blues, and big band songs.
Diana is survived by her husband, Rey, her brother Barney Koszalka, PhD, of Chapel Hill, NC, (Betsi), identical-twin nieces, Amy Drew and Erica Ehst (and extended families) and several cousins. A funeral mass will be held for Diana at St John Vianney Catholic Church, 17100 115th Avenue SE, Vashon on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at 11:00 AM. Interment will take place later in the year at Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis. In lieu of flowers, memorials to any of following organizations could be considered: American Cancer Society, St. John Vianney Catholic Church, St. Damien Catholic Parish, Kaunakakai, HI, the Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County, and the Molokai Humane Society.
