Edwin C Nichols, a 67 year resident of Vashon Island , passed away on May 5, 2011 , at the age of 92.He was born to Cyrus and Caroline Nichols, in Friday Harbor , Washington on July 8, 1918 .The family moved to Columbia City , Rainier Valley , Seattle , shortly thereafter.Edwin was a graduate of Columbia Grade School , Franklin High School and Peterson's Business College .After five years with Consolidated Freightways in administrative positions, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942.He retired from the Army in 1962 at the grade of First Sergeant and continued to serve in Federal Service for nine more years.Since the time of his final retirement in 1971, he has enjoyed his hobbies of gardening, golfing and camping.He was a charter member of the Vashon Island Golf and Country Club, won its championship several times and was honored as Golfer of the Year in 1987.He also played the piano, enjoyed music, and was an avid sports enthusiast. Those who knew Edwin, found him to be a man of extraordinary character, kindness and generosity. He walked in genuine harmony with Nature and with his fellow man.Edwin is survived by his beloved wife Inez, his son Scott Nichols, his daughters Lorraine Jackson and Wendy Olson, step-sons David and Thomas Carlson, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.Full military honors will be bestowed in a graveyard service at Tahoma National Cemetery on Thursday, May 19, at 11:15 A.M.Donations may be made in his name to the Vashon Island Pet Protectors or to the Providence Hospice of Seattle Foundation.
