James E. Vorhies Sr. and Dorothy A. Vorhies. On the morning of August 30, 2010 he passed peacefully in his sleep. Jim was eldest of three children and is survived by his brother Dennis and sister Debbie Vorhies-Greene, his current wife Karon Vorhies, first wife Lola Vorhies and two daughters, Kristy Vorhies-Jensen (Rodney Jensen) and Andrea Vorhies (Chris Thieme), step children; Steve, Mindy and Robert. He enjoyed all of his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a plethora of nieces and nephews at every possible opportunity. He often regaled us with stories of his cousins, aunts and uncles from his youth and was always glad to see family when the opportunity arose. He was a big fan of gatherings with picnics of fried chicken, BBQ, potato salad, and "WALTER"-melon. He served his country proudly for 23 years as a Communications System Technician and Control Supervisor (this is a fancy way of saying Radioman). He was professional, detail-oriented, good under pressure and comic relief when it became too stressful for many. He has been referred to as a world-class communicator. He was so proud when he made Radioman Chief, that he advised us we could now call him by his first name, "CHIEF." He retired as Chief Petty Officer in the U. S. Navy, and a Vietnam Veteran. He made many friends around the world.He was a mathematician and computer programmer. He was enamored with numbers and computers.He received his Associate of Science degree from Olympic College in 1974. He could figure out any math problem and make a computer do just about anything you can think of, a technological artist.Jim was a funny guy. Often he would torment us all with his jokes and puns. He spent time attempting to perfect his delivery of the funniest of lines. Some believed he may have been a 10-year-old boy his whole life. He made the humdrum fun and the most difficult of times bearable. He knew just where fun lived and liked to be a big spender when he could.He loved music, poetry and theater and told me he played the bass violin in his youth. He adored making his children learn big band songs or silly songs from movies he had seen and then perform them for his friends and loved ones. He was very proud of them and their ability to sing.He loved history and obscure facts. Many of his sentences began with "Do you know . . . ?"It was a challenge to be able to come up with the answers and more fun when you could tell him something he didn't know.He was a puzzle solver and a hunter of truth for his church, this was his passion and few have delved into as many religions to find answers to the questions of faith.His love for God, as shown through his many years of membership in The Mother Church, will continue to be a blessing to those who knew him. He achieved his life goal to practice the teachings of Mary Baker Eddy and to become a practitioner.He served a variety of positions at the 14th Church of Christ Scientist in West Seattle, including 1st reader and church clerk. He read aloud the weekly Bible lesson at Daystar, for many years.We want everyone to know how important he was to all of us and how loved he will continue to be in our hearts for all of eternity. A celebration of life will be shared by family and friends at Daystar Retirement Village, on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 1:00 p.m., in the activity room of Bldg. 3. Parking is limited; we recommend parking in the Westwood Plaza across the street.A private family celebration will be set at a future date, in Marblemount, WA.
