In 1909, the Garvin family opened Island Funeral Service and began serving the residents of Vashon Island. Their family continued serving the community until 1966, when Frank and June Harris purchased the funeral home. Frank and June built the current funeral home building in 1966. Ten years later, in 1979, Tim & Sue Wilcoxen moved to Vashon Island and became both owners of Island Funeral Service and active members of the community. Upon their retirement in 1997, the Wilcoxens selected brothers, Russ and Doug Weeks, to continue their tradition of caring and commitment to the families of Vashon Island.
Vashon native, Lisa Devereau, has been the catalyst for compassionate funeral service on Vashon Island since 2000, becoming a Licensed Funeral Director in 2008, and subsequently serving as Manager at Island Funeral Service since then. Lisa is well known for her dedication to this profession and to the people of Vashon.
The building was purchased by the Puget Sound Zen Center in 2021, where we continue to meet and care for families, while also valuing our new and strong relationship with the members of the Zen Center who have graciously accommodated this seamless transition. In 2022, the Mohler family purchased the business from the Weeks and continues to care for the community both directly and with the strong influence and presence of Lisa. March 1st of 2024, Travis Locke took over ownership of Island Funeral Service and with Lisa, will continue to care for our Vashon Community.
Whether death occurs on-island or off-island, we continue to serve the families of Vashon and Maury Island with the utmost dignity and respect, considering each one an honor and a sacred trust, while keeping in mind the unique character and traditions of life on the Island and continuing Vashon's Tradition of Caring.
